Morgan’s Lighthouse Lullaby
By Steve Cleverley and Sanj Sen
Snuggle down, cosy up, close your eyes and relax. Tonight we’re travelling to a craggy Moshi coastline to visit a faraway lighthouse, home to a little Moshling, called Morgan.
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
Morgan is a Moshling who lives beside the sea
Alone within his slender home that towers like a tree
It sits atop a rocky cliff, the drop could not be steeper
For Morgan is the Moshi world’s most lonely lighthouse keeper
His lighthouse has a giant lamp atop its lofty tower
Which thanks to lots of special mirrors yields enormous power
It warns the ships that get too close of dangerous rocks and reefs
So everyone who spots its light feels joy, mixed with relief
See, above all, Morgan’s lighthouse is a beacon of true hope
Throwing those who’re lost at sea a lifeline like a rope
Its guiding light helps every Moshling bobbing on the sea
“But the only one it doesn’t help,” thinks Morgan, “Is poor me”
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
Morgan’s heard that life’s true wonders lie beyond the shore
But Morgan’s never left home, so he really can’t be sure
He dreams of things he’s read about, and pictures that he’s seen
Though he cannot leave his lighthouse home to realize his dream
See, every night he climbs the stairs that spiral up the tower
His lighthouse is so very tall it easily takes an hour
He charges up the mighty lamp by winding up a handle
Which makes its bulb shine brightly like a thousand blazing candles
The trouble is he has to do this each and every night
So leaving is impossible, even in daylight
‘Cos if he ever did set sail he wouldn’t see much beauty…
Before the time would come once more for him to do his duty
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
Tonight is like most others, Morgan’s winding up the lamp
When a bird lands on the balcony, a cheeky looking scamp
“Hello my name’s Tiki,” the little toucan squawks
“Well, I never,” Morgan says, “A birdy that can talk!”
The two of them get chatting and Morgan shares his woe
“I’d love to see so many things… but simply cannot go”
Tiki thinks and then a lightbulb goes off in his head
“Why don’t you set sail and let me wind your lamp instead?”
“Really?” Morgan asks him, “I won’t be gone for long”
“Take your time” says Tiki, “I’ve not got much else on”
Morgan thanks his brand new friend, “You’re really very kind”
Then shows him how to work the lamp by giving it a wind
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
Morgan loads his little boat with several days’ supplies
Then rows into the distance, beneath the starry skies
He looks back at his lighthouse till it’s just a little speck
And hopes its light will guide him home, following his trek
For several days and nights he visits places, far and wide…
Islands, beaches, towns and lakes… and plenty more besides
Every Moshling Morgan meets somehow knows his name
For it seems owning a lighthouse brings a modicum of fame
Everyone’s appreciative of Morgan’s dedication
In helping others see the light by staying in isolation
Apparently his lighthouse has shown countless folks the way
In worrying times when shifting tides have led their boats astray
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
The time has come for Morgan to row back to his cliff
But the ocean’s pretty choppy and the winds are rather stiff
He’s made so many memories that his mind’s now overflowing
Which makes navigation difficult, especially while he’s rowing
At least he knows his lighthouse will guide him like a beacon
Even as he’s tiring and his arms begin to weaken
Meanwhile in the lighthouse, Tiki winds the light
And hopes his new friend Morgan will be coming home tonight
The sky is looking stormy now, though Morgan soldiers on
But he cannot see the shoreline, perhaps the light has gone?
“Maybe Tiki fell asleep, or flew off in a huff?”
Thinks Morgan as his little boat rocks in the sea so rough
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
Squinting through a swirl of fog now, Morgan feels alone
And even though he loved his trip, he wants to get back home
Tiki’s very tired now, winding up the light
But he needs to keep it glowing through the darkness of the night
The storm is getting worse now but Morgan won’t surrender
He knows if it goes on like this his chances will be slender
Then Tiki has a bright idea, to make the light shine more
So he whistles very loudly to his friends beyond the shore
Morgan hears a birdie whistle floating on the wind
It lifts his spirits just as his belief had slightly dimmed
He sees a flock of birds like Tiki flapping through the sky
It fills his heart with hope, although he has no idea why?
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
Tiki’s friends arrive and he explains what he does nightly
And says that if they all push now the light will shine more brightly
The toucans push with all their might to spin the handle quicker
Which makes the lamp gleam so much that the heavens start to flicker
Lost and lonely, Morgan rubs his eyes in disbelief
Then swerves his vessel just in time to miss the rocky reef
A beam of light shines in the distance showing him the way
So Morgan rows towards it, to the safety of his bay
Morgan finally lands his boat upon the windswept shore
And clambers up the cliffside path that leads to his front door
He climbs the spiral staircase and when he’s at the top
He sees a scene that makes his little heart just want to pop
Guiding light, lead me home
When you’re shining, I’m never alone
Steering those… lost at sea,
Through the darkness, you and me
An entire flock of Tiki’s pals are sitting on the ledge
“I said I’d help” smiles Tiki, “I always keep a pledge”
“I don’t know how to thank you,” Morgan says to his new friends
“You cannot know the lengths to which my gratitude extends”
“Being out there made me see how much I love my home”
“That’s good to hear,” says Tiki “But you needn’t be alone…
My friends and I will always try to visit every day
And if we can’t we’ll call you via video… what do you say?”
Morgan says, “I’d love that… you’ve become my guiding light…
A little like my lighthouse, shining brightly through the night”
“I trust your voyage inspired you? asks Tiki with a grin
“Oh yes,” says Morgan settling down, “Now, where do I begin…”
Goodnight
